For NewsMasher users tired of WordPress breaking things

Publishing · 8 min read

I thought WordPress was just part of the deal. I built my whole publishing system around it. I was wrong.

I spent more than 20 years building tools that automate content. The tools kept getting better. The sites they published to kept breaking. When I finally looked honestly at what was actually failing, the answer was embarrassing.

Let me get the embarrassing part out of the way first.

I co-built NewsMasher. RSSMasher. AIMasher. Software that finds a story, writes it up and publishes it without me touching a single key. The automation worked. It still works. I am proud of it.

And then a plugin update would take the whole site down at 2 a.m. and I would be back at my laptop in the dark, fixing something that had nothing to do with the content.

That is the part I kept not talking about.

The only thing in my publishing system that ever broke was the website.

The tools were doing their job. NewsMasher was finding stories, writing them in the right voice, queuing them up. The site was the weak link. And not because WordPress is bad software. Because running a news site on WordPress means running plugins. Running plugins means updates. Updates break things. That is just how it works.

Here is the whole thing.

What's in this post

Why the automation works but the site keeps failing

Think about what NewsMasher actually does. It scans what is trending in your niche. It writes the article in a voice you set. It posts. You do not have to be there.

That is real automation. The kind that runs on a Tuesday night while you are watching something with your family.

Now think about what happens when that article tries to land on a WordPress site with a plugin conflict. It does not land cleanly. Or the site goes white. Or the SEO plugin that was fine yesterday decided today was the day to throw an error. And suddenly your automated publishing system is waiting on you to fix something manually.

It is not your fault. WordPress was built to be flexible, and flexibility means surface area. More plugins means more things that can break. More things that can break means more nights you did not plan on spending in your hosting dashboard.

You did not automate your content to spend your evenings debugging your website.

The moment it changed

Wayne Atkinson is the lead developer behind the Masher tools. He has been in the code on all of this longer than almost anyone. And at some point he stopped patching WordPress for our publishing sites and built a site from scratch with nothing to patch.

No plugins at all. The Masher tools post into it by direct API. No plugin in the middle, nothing to update, nothing to conflict.

I moved my own autoblogging onto it. Then every news site I run.

The tools publish. The sites just work.

That is not a headline I wrote for marketing. That is the sentence I said to Wayne when I realized I had not thought about the sites in weeks.

What the publishing setup looks like now

Here is the path a story takes once this is in place.

NewsMasher writes the article → It posts straight into the Masher Site by API → The site files it into its category and RSS feed → Article2Video and MarketMasher pick it up from the feed

No copy and paste. No logging in. No plugin handling the handoff that could break on a Tuesday.

The article lands in its category. It joins the site feed and the category feed. If you have Article2Video pointed at that category feed, it turns the post into a narrated video. If you have MarketMasher set up, it shares to social. Every click that comes back lands on a fast, clean news page with your ad zones already in place.

The whole chain runs without you.

That is what automation is supposed to feel like. Not "I set it up and I hope nothing breaks." Set it up and walk away.

Why I kept doing it the old way anyway

This is the honest part.

WordPress worked. Mostly. The sites ranked. The content went out. When nothing broke, the system hummed along fine. I kept telling myself the plugin headaches were just the cost of doing business online.

And that is true for some people. If you run one or two sites, you check them every few days, and you have a developer you can call, WordPress is probably fine. Keep it.

But I was not running one or two sites. I was running a content operation that was supposed to run itself. Every time I added a site, I added upkeep. More plugins, more hosting invoices, more things that could wake me up at 2 a.m.

More sites should mean more output. Not more upkeep.

The old way scaled the wrong thing.

The insight: what actually breaks and why

Here is the mechanism, plain.

A WordPress news site needs plugins to do the things a news site needs: SEO, caching, security, the publishing connection to your tools. Each plugin is a dependency. Each dependency is something that can fail when another plugin updates, when WordPress itself updates, or when your host patches something upstream.

A Masher Site has none of those dependencies. The things a news site needs to do well: take in posts, show them cleanly, load fast. That is it. Everything else is removed.

The old wayThe new way
Plugins to keep updated, on every siteNone. Nothing to update, nothing to conflict.
Security patches you run yourselfHandled for you, encrypted API access included.
Monthly hosting bill per siteOne payment, hosting included for life.
Publishing from Masher tools through a pluginDirect API. No plugin in the middle.
Category RSS feeds set up by handBuilt automatically for every category.
Adding another site means more upkeepNo extra upkeep per site added.

And here is the honest concession: if you need a money site with custom forms, a WooCommerce store, membership walls and a dozen integrations, WordPress or a platform built for that job is probably still your answer. Masher Sites is for news. It does the news job with nothing extra in the way.

What the real numbers look like

Setup is about 10 minutes. That is the product's own number and I will stand behind it because I have watched it happen.

  1. Pick your network: 3 sites, 10 sites or 20 sites. One payment, no monthly bill. The 3-site network is $500. The 10-site network is $1,000. The 20-site network is $1,900.
  2. Send support your domain. They send back one DNS record to add at your registrar.
  3. Pick one of the 4 site styles and set up your categories.
  4. Point NewsMasher at your new site to publish by API.
  5. Add your category feeds to Article2Video and MarketMasher, drop in your ads, and walk away.

That is it. No software to download. Everything is hosted and managed.

Take a look at the setup page. Pricing, styles, and everything that is included are all on one page with no form to fill out first.

What it actually looks like on the screen

Four styles. You pick one when you set up the site.

News Board
Big image-led headlines up top, a clean grid of stories below. Good for magazine-style niche news.
News Blog
A featured story with byline and read time, then trending stories sorted by category.
Pin Site
A Pinterest-style wall with color-coded categories and sorting options.
Video View
A big lead video with titles over the art. Built for sites that lean heavily on video posts.

Every style is mobile first. Every page is built for the way Google actually indexes. The ad zones are already in the layout, ready for your own HTML banners, affiliate offers or Google ads. SEO is built into every page by default.

And if a site takes off, Masher Sites is CDN ready. Traffic grows, a CDN gets added, no downtime.

The difference between a system that runs and a system that needs you is one setup session.

Why this holds up when the tools change

I will tell you something I have noticed after more than 20 years in marketing software. Platforms come and go. Plugin ecosystems get abandoned. Hosting companies get acquired. The thing that keeps a publishing operation running is whether the foundation underneath it is simple enough not to break.

A site with no plugins has nothing to deprecate. Nothing to update into a conflict. Nothing to fall over when a third-party service changes its API without warning.

The tools that publish into a Masher Site: NewsMasher, RSSMasher, AIMasher, VidPenguin2, BoosterPages. They post by direct API. That connection is as simple as a connection gets. There is nothing in the middle aging out.

Wayne and I built Masher Sites for our own publishing first. Every one of my autoblogs and news sites runs on it today. That is not a testimonial I am quoting. That is just the situation.

What it turns into once it is running

Once the setup is done and NewsMasher is posting, the category feeds open up a second layer.

Every category on a Masher Site gets its own RSS feed. Take one of those feeds, start an Article2Video project with it as the source, set how the videos look and where they post, and that category is now filling its own video channel. No camera. No editing. Repeat for every category you want as its own channel.

The automated way

NewsMasher writes, the site files it, Article2Video turns the category feed into videos, MarketMasher shares them. You check in when you want to.

The manual way

Write, upload, format, share, repeat. Every single post, every single time.

There is also a use I did not expect: some site owners run their Masher Sites as a guest posting service on the side, taking posts by hand when they want to. The setup is simple enough that it is easy to manage both at once.

If you want to try this

I am not going to pretend a page like this can make the decision for you.

What I can tell you is what it is. It is a news site your Masher tools post straight into, no plugins, no monthly hosting bill, one payment for a network of 3, 10 or 20 sites. Setup is about 10 minutes. If you have never touched DNS before, support sends you one record to add and that is the whole technical lift.

If you are already running NewsMasher and the site you publish to is giving you grief, this is the most direct fix I know. It is what I moved to. It is what Wayne built. It is the thing I wish existed when we were first running content operations on WordPress.

If the timing is not right, that is fine. But if you have had one too many late nights fixing something that should have just worked, the pricing page is worth a look.
